What Does Critter Guard Look Like?
Critter guard is a black wire mesh wrapped firmly around solar modules to prevent unwanted guests like pigeons and squirrels from making your panels home. The product is attached using clips called j-hooks, which hook under the panel. It can't be chewed through, and is designed for the Canadian climate.

Why Install Critter Guard?
Without critter guard, roof mounted solar panels can be an attractive habitat for animals like pigeons and squirrels seeking shelter from the elements. Roof mounted solar panels are typically installed using an elevated rail system - this results in a 4" - 6" space underneath the panels which can comfortably fit a variety of animals. This space provides shade from the heat in the summer months, and protection from the wind chill during Alberta's winters. Pigeons are the most common pest to nest under solar panels, however other types of birds, mammals, and even snakes have been found underneath panels!
Pigeons are one of the worst pests to have under solar panels because of the quantity and toxicity of the waste they produce. The waste can be quite acidic, which can deteriorate shingles over time. We've seen this waste accumulate in gutters and valleys, creating an off-putting mess for future clean-up.
Additionally, animals have been documented damaging solar modules by chewing on the solar PV wire strapped underneath the panels. Depending on the extent of the damage, several panels and microinverters may need to be replaced. This can add a significant repair cost for your system, and can create an electrical hazard if not rectified in a timely manner.
What is critter guard?
Critter guard is a black mesh designed to close the gap between your solar panels and the roof. Closing this gap with the mesh barrier keeps pest from using the solar panels as habitat. The mesh is typically made from thin gauge wire, and is wrapped around the panels and secured using straps and hooks.
How does critter guard protect panels?
Critter guard protects panels by preventing animals from getting underneath and damaging the sensitive components like the microinverter and the wires between panels. Animals typically will not try to access if they encounter a barrier. Additionally, the barriers we use contain metal wires (vs cheaper plastic) which is harder for a determined animal to chew through.
Do I need critter guard for my solar panels?
No, but it's highly recommended. Most home owners will not have problems with animals, however when problems arise it can be hundreds to thousands of dollars to fix. People who purchase critter guard see it as a preventative investment to protect their solar panels from the potential of damage.
How much does critter guard installation cost?
The amount of solar panels, and the layout of the solar panels is the main factor in determining the price of critter guard installation. The standard critter guard is typically priced around $50-60/Panel. A home with 20 solar panels will likely be around $1,000 for professional critter guard installation.
How long does critter guard last?
Critter guard wears down over time, but generally is expected to last the lifetime of the system with regular maintenance.
Does critter guard impact my solar panel production?
Critter guard will not impact solar panel performance and energy generation. The barrier is on the side of the panels and does not shade the modules.
How is critter guard installed?
Critter guard typically comes on 100 ft rolls, and is first stretched and cut to the length of the panels. The barrier is then wrapped around the panels and bent to close off access underneath the panels. The guard is secured every 1-2 feet using "clips" which hook the edge of the panel and the critter guard mesh.
Does critter guard protect against all pests?
Critter guard protects against most common Alberta pests like squirrels and pigeons. Hypothetically, smaller pests like mice would still be able to access underneath the panels - however we have not seen instances of solar panel related damages in Alberta due to these types of pests.
Will critter guard void my panel warranty?
Critter guard - when installed correctly should not void your solar panel manufacturer warranty. As the mesh is simply hooked to the panels for securing it, no damage to the solar panels will occur during an Evalence critter guard installation.
Is critter guard visible from the ground?
Depending on the type of roof slope and access critter guard may be visible from the ground. Many customers find the black mesh when secured properly completes the look and reduces the ability for people to see under the panels.
